Big changes coming to Library free meal program

The Blackwell Public Library’s Free Summer Meal Program has gone through a radical change in the last few weeks, and the library released an update on the current

state of the program which has transitioned from grab-and-go meals to be eaten on-location to food boxes designed with families in mind.

As per Hunger Free Oklahoma and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, the meal boxes are approved for children 18 and under. Each child can take 2 boxes. They are designed for a weekly eating schedule and include 5 breakfast meals and 5 lunches for a total of 20 meals per child.

The meal program is designed to run daily, Monday -Friday, from 11 a.m. until noon and may be picked up once every 10 days.

Pickup is first come, first served and will began exactly at 11 a.m. There will be no early sign-ups.

Pickup will be in front of the library on west Padon. Traffic will flow northbound up 1st Street, turning right onto Padon, getting their boxes, and driving off towards Main Street.

Upon pickup, recipients will be given a card or a slip that tells them when they can come back for more boxes, which is 10 days from the last pickup.

So if a box is picked up on a Tuesday, the recipient may come back that following Tuesday.

Children do not need to be present to pick up the boxes, however if a box is picked up for a child it must be the parent or guardian of a registered child to receive the boxes.

Children themselves may come to pick up the boxes, but the library notes that the boxes may be heavy
