TV's bleakest drama returns next Sunday

April 03, 2025

The highly anticipated second season of HBO's "The Last of Us" is set to premiere on April 13, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on both HBO and Max. Following the success of the first season, which garnered critical acclaim and multiple Emmy Awards, the series continues to delve into the harrowing, post-apocalyptic world that has captivated audiences worldwide.
Season 2 picks up five years after the events of the first season, with Joel and Ellie navigating the complexities of their relationship amidst the ongoing challenges of a world ravaged by a fungal pandemic.

This time jump introduces viewers to a more mature Ellie, now 19, as her life is upended and she begins a harrowing quest for revenge that will take her into a world beyond darkness and cruelty.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie, respectively.

Gabriel Luna returns as Tommy, Joel's brother, while Rutina Wesley continues her portrayal of Maria.

New additions to the cast include Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a pivotal character whose introduction is set to bring new complexities to the storyline. Isabela Merced joins as Dina, Ellie's romantic interest, and Young Mazino portrays Jesse, a significant figure within their community.
The series continues under the guidance of co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.

Composer Gustavo Santaolalla returns to score the series, maintaining the haunting musical themes that have become synonymous with "The Last of Us."
Following the premiere on April 13, new episodes will air weekly on Sundays culminating in a seven-episode season.
This season, of a planned 4-5, will be based on 2020’s controversial and best-selling videogame “The Last of Us Part II”, and if the reaction to the game’s incredible divisive plot is any indication, Season 2 of “The Last of Us” will have its fair share of water-cooler discussion…and intense online arguing.
