The Blackwell Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Awards Celebration Banquet last week at the Blackwell Fairgrounds Event Center, bringing together community members, business leaders, and local officials for an evening of recognition and reflection.
The event honored outstanding individuals and organizations while highlighting optimism for Blackwell’s future.

The evening opened with City Manager Jerry Wieland presenting the Citizen of the Year award to Cory Hanebrink, who serves as Blackwell’s Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director.
In an emotional tribute, Wieland described Hanebrink as a devoted family man and a steadfast leader who consistently goes above and beyond for the community, particularly in times of crisis.
A visibly moved Hanebrink accepted the honor, emphasizing that the recognition belongs to the entire Blackwell Fire Department and EMS team.

The “I Am Blackwell” Award was presented to Lea Ann Bechtel for her decades of service and commitment to the community.
Bechtel has played a vital role in numerous Chamber initiatives and the Leadership Blackwell Program.
The award was presented by her longtime friend, Blackwell Mayor Pat Hullet.

Volunteer of the Year honors went to Wendy Evans, recognized for her unwavering dedication and countless hours contributed to community functions and events.
The Chamber’s Maroon Pride Award was presented by Lori Meador to Connor Cline, a Blackwell graduate and head coach of the Maroon Wrestling program. Under Cline’s leadership, Blackwell’s wrestling dynasty has continued to earn numerous titles and accolades.
The Director of the Year recognition went to Susan “Sue” Hetrick, whose leadership and dedication have been instrumental to the continued success of the Blackwell Chamber of Commerce.
The annual banquet once again showcased the individuals whose leadership, volunteerism, and service help shape the spirit and progress of the Blackwell community.
