Kay County Fair Invites Bakers to Compete in Best of Wheat Bread Contest

Home bakers from across Kay County are invited to showcase their talents this September as the Best of Wheat Bread Baking Contest returns as part of the 2026 Kay County Free Fair.

The annual competition, held during the Kay County Free Fair Sept. 14-20, offers both junior and senior divisions and gives participants the opportunity to have their homemade breads judged by experienced evaluators. County champions will also have the chance to advance to competition at the Oklahoma State Fair.

Entries for the contest will be accepted Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds, with judging scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The contest features a variety of categories designed to accommodate bakers of all experience levels. Classes include white bread, whole wheat bread, dinner rolls, sweet breads, other wheat breads, specialty-shaped breads and bread machine entries.

Organizers encourage both seasoned bakers and first-time competitors to participate, noting that the contest celebrates the tradition of homemade bread while highlighting Oklahoma's wheat industry.
