Blackwell Public Schools highlights growth, student achievements for 2026-27

Blackwell Public Schools is celebrating student accomplishments, expanded educational opportunities and continued growth across the district as the 2026-27 school year gets underway.

The district recently released an overview highlighting enrollment, academics, athletics, career education and extracurricular achievements under the message, “Small school. Big opportunities. Even bigger pride.”

Blackwell Public Schools reports a districtwide enrollment of 1,060 students for the 2026-27 school year. Blackwell Elementary School accounts for 523 students, Blackwell Middle School has 215 students and Blackwell High School has 322 students.

The district also reports 92 certified teachers and a student-to-teacher ratio of 15-to-1. Blackwell High School was identified by the district as the highest-rated high school in Kay County from 2023 through 2026 and underwent a complete renovation during the 2024-25 school year.

Academically, the district reported an average ACT score of 18.6 for 2026, which BPS noted was above the state average, along with 24 National Honor Society members.

Students have also accumulated a number of academic and extracurricular achievements during 2026. Blackwell's Academic Team qualified for the area tournament, while art students earned seven top awards at a local competition.

The Blackwell High School band earned first place at the Alamo Bowl Parade Competition and first place at the State Fair Parade. Six seniors participated in All-State activities.

Blackwell students also earned recognition through CareerTech, FCCLA, FFA and TSA programs. FCCLA students earned first place, three second-place finishes and one third-place award at state competition, while FFA had four state finalists and received a $150,000 grant for a new greenhouse.

The district also highlighted its foreign exchange program, which welcomed eight students representing six countries.

Athletics were another area of success. The girls basketball team earned a district championship, finished as regional runner-up and had one All-Conference player. Blackwell wrestling recorded three state champions and 13 individual state wrestling titles. Vocal music students earned one superior solo rating, six excellent solo ratings and one superior solo at the state level.

Blackwell Public Schools also pointed to the range of opportunities available to students preparing for college and careers.

During 2026, 68 students enrolled through Pioneer Technology Center, 25 participated in concurrent enrollment and 30 took part in internships.

Blackwell High School offers five Advanced Placement courses: AP Government, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, AP Statistics and AP Biology.

Students can also choose from electives including ACT Prep, AG Science I-IV, Art Foundations, 2D, 3D and Studio, Aviation I-III, Band, Marching and Concert and Jazz, Computers I, Computer Science I, Construction, Cybersecurity, Family and Consumer Science, Fundamentals of Technology, Laser Engraving, Newspaper, Robotics, Spanish I-IV, Show Choir, Chorale and Theater, Wood Tech I-IV and Yearbook.

The district additionally noted that Blackwell High School is one of only three schools in Oklahoma offering Wood Shop.

Through its overview of the 2026-27 school year, Blackwell Public Schools said it is celebrating the opportunities available to local students across academics, athletics, technology, career preparation and extracurricular activities while continuing to promote its districtwide “We Are Maroons” identity.
